Old School Jam #8

Oh man! 1994. I wish I wasn't 7 years old at this time, but man bring this back! What happened?!

Woah!

This is some real down-tempo shit!! Jose James is a singer from NYC who has worked with so many people. The Jazzy Sport Team, Flying Lotus, Jazzanova, Giles Peterson. This dude is sick. Check out his new video.

Again?

Just found this video from Gagle's new "Slow But Steady" album. This beat is so much different from their other stuff its crazy. Its almost a rock song. Still fly as hell and killing it in Japan

Enjoy.

Welcome To The D Baby!

Recently it seems that Detroit is just killing all other cities in hip-hop. Back in the day LA, NY, and CHI were the cities throwing it down the hardest but Detroit has really come to the forefront in recent years. With artists like Black Milk, Slum Village (Elzhi, T3, -Jay Dee & Baatin RIP) Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, Royce Da 5'9, House Shoes, Illa J...how can you really go wrong? All these dudes are holding it down and repping the D to the fullest. Check it out if you don't believe me

New Tip

The newest Q-Tip video just came out this past week or so. Check it out. The 90's might be back!!

Classic!!

Music does have the power to heal. I have always been a firm believer in this and I really think it does have the power to do so. There is a song for every mood that you could be in. I have been kinda down recently but this song is so beautiful.

Breakestra

I picked this up today in a local store in the bargain bin, and hot damn! It's Stones Throw Records' own Breakestra. I also found Brand Nubian's "Slow Down" De La Soul with production by Jay Dee on "Stakes Is High," which makes it my 3rd copy of that track and the 4th if you count another Jay Dee Remix! Also got some old Pete Rock and CL Smooth with "Straighten It Out." Not bad for 5 minutes at a small little joint and a total of $17. Everything was $4 and under. They also had some Slum Village and Common, but I already had the 12" singles. Anyways check out the Breakestra track at the Stones Throw website. Although the A side is pretty solid, check out the B side with "Remember Who You Are" It is a keeper for sure, funky as hell!

Japan!!

I will be heading to Japan in the next week or so, I have a gig on the 19th at Club Buddah, and I have been trying to get some stuff together recently. I am thinking about doing a Madlib/Dilla hour or so then get the 90's classics popping off after that. I am so excited, hopefully I can record what I have been thinking of doing and put it up on here later today. I will keep you posted!

Much Love,
Richie

Guilty As Charged

Guilty did it again! I am so excited for the OJ Simpson collaberation with Madlib to come out here soon, but this song is tying me over for now. Just got the 12" and banging that shit hard! Dig it and get dirty with it. Obviously a Dilla beat.

Simon Says...

So I know that most people when they think of Pharoahe Monch they think of "The Light" or the group Organized Konfusion but this song always gets me pumped up. Simon Says is a banging track that will always get that party started no matter how lame people are. More to come later...

Hey Yo Funky Wake Up!

This song's chorus is poppin. It just makes you want to yell along if you hear this. Listen to it loud and keep it there. I love this video too, because it goes into my other favorite song, "Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time (Make It Funky)"

Mos Def & Dilla

So what could really go wrong? This has to be one of my favorite combos of all time. When these two get on the same song it is always a soulful, educated, and Linkbanging track. Here are a few of my favorites:

Shades of Blue

So I first heard this a year or so ago and this video always caught my attention. I have no idea why but maybe because Madlib has almost no actual DJing footage or because I just like the album, but its funny to see his style. He looks almost uncomfortable Djing which is really odd for a world class/insanely talented beatmaker. I hope he doesn't always have to use the same hand when he is trying to mix, it looks kind of goofy. Oh well he is still one of the greatest producers and an amazing jazz composer.

Going Back To Japan

I just bought my tickets to Japan for 2 weeks in August. As you may imagine I have been listening to Gagle and Mitsu The Beats all day to get in the mood. I am so excited to see everyone again and hopefully throw down a few tracks on the wheels of steel.

I'm going to leave you with my all time favorite Gagle song. Enjoy!

I Wish I Knew French

So Hocus Pocus is really addicting. I am not talking about the 90's Disney movie but instead about the French MC. He mixes a lot of accoustic stuff with jazz and down tempo relaxed shit. He is pretty insane on the mic even though I can't understand anything he is saying. Check it out for yourself.

DJ Kentaro

I don't know how many times I have seen this but every time I just freak out and start scratching, trying to create new stuff in my head. Recently I have hit a wall with some scratching techniques, so I keep watching documentaries to try and find new inspiration, and this video is never going to let you down. DJ Kentaro is one of the most amazing and creative djs out there. When I think of his style the first person that comes to mind would have to be Shadow. They both just have such a unique style and these two guys really go to show that music and hip-hop especially can cross so many borders especially nationality and race. Enough of this just watch this shit!

DJ Kentaro Documentary Clip

Jazzy Morning

I just started listening/found out about the Jazz Liberatorz a few weeks ago and to be honest I can't stop. These 3 French dudes are insane!! Not only do they take smooth hip-hop beats to a new level but they throw the best American MC's on their tracks. This one features Mos Def. Enjoy this cuz you know I am.

Peace.

I Need This

I need to find a copy of this song. Damn it is one of the sweetest stories and David Ruffin's voice is untouchable. The way he gets that almost yelp at the end of some notes is amazing to me.

I need a girl that can accept me for being just a "Common Man"

Tuesday June 16th

Just had a crazy weekend and I need to get back in the swing of things. I was thinking of a song to get me going again and this is all that would come to mind.
